How it Began
My journey with homemade soap began about 2 years ago when it seems like the world came to a stop. Here I was, locked up in my house because of Covid and bored out of my mind. I needed something to distract me from the reality that I was secluded from all my family, friends & colleagues. It started with a simple YouTube video that took me down this rabbit hole of watching people make these beautiful handcrafted works of art.
Let me tell you, I was hooked! I loved the way handmade soap looked but more importantly I loved the freedom of expression that all these soap makers displayed. Their artisan soaps were the bomb and they knew it!
Off the Sidelines and Into the Game
After countless hours of videos and research I said to myself "hey I can do this, I really want to make my own handmade soap". I mean what else did I have to do. I was tired of watching the news and there's only but so much work & cleaning a girl can do.
So, I did want all newbies do and I ordered my first kit off Bramble Berry. About 2 weeks later, I had all the recommended PPE, my kit was delivered, and I was ready to dive in.
I'm not going to lie; I was nervous as heck. Considering that I do not have a creative bone in my body, I wasn't sure how this was going to turn out. I made sure no one was home to witness my potentially disastrous attempt at homemade soap. BUT, guess what? I did it! AND I LOVED IT!
Yup! I Did That!
Words cannot express how I felt that day. But when look back at it, I compare it to that wonderous feeling that overcomes you after have after having a child. That feeling of "I did that! I created that beautiful thing" (okay maybe my kid isn't a thing, but you know what I mean).
I can honestly say it was one of my proudest moments in life. I created my first homemade soap, and nothing blew up. I mean here I was acting like a mad scientist in my kitchen mixing oils & milk & sodium hydroxide and I survived. Not only did I survive, but I made 3 pounds of beautiful handmade soap.
Never Looked Back
Once I experienced that high of making my first soap, I can honestly say I never looked back. Making handmade soap has helped me in more ways that I thought. It has become a great stress reliever. Having a bad day? Let’s go make soap. Feeling creative and want to express myself? Go make soap. Looking for a gift to give? Handmade soap makes a great gift.
The one good thing that has come from Covid was my love for soap making. I can only hope that at some point in your life, you get to experience your own kind of creative joy that soap making had brought into my life.
