In the health and beauty industry, many products and services come in “his” and “her” versions. The latest trend has come in his and hers soap. But men aren’t entirely on board yet. Studies have shown that most men still use a standard bar of soap for all of their needs. I would bet it's safe to say that even going as far back as a decade, men were still only using ordinary soap from the drugstore. It’s unlikely they were looking at soap specifically made for them.
Products in the health and beauty industry are predominantly for women, but why are men left out? Why do they get a basic run-of-the-mill soap, and women get soap made with shea butter and scented with essential oils to help them feel good from the inside out? Men deserve good health and beauty products, too - starting with soap. It’s why I created a separate line of men’s handmade soap. They saw their partners using more feminine handmade soaps and wanted soap for themselves, too - only with a more masculine twist.
The Skin Difference
There are many similarities between men and women and many differences between men and women. Most importantly for our discussion here, men and women want to have and use good, quality soap. As mentioned above, more soap gets curated toward women, with fewer options for men. But why do men need soap made for them?
Men tend to have thicker, more oily, and rougher skin than women. Men’s skin is about 20-25% thicker than women’s. This also makes men’s skin tougher. Due to male genetics, men have more oily skin. Your skin produces an oily substance called sebum, a/k/a your body’s natural oils. Men’s skin produces almost double the amount of sebum as women do. This can make men's skin more oily and acne-prone.
With these skin differences in mind, I set out to develop a line of handmade soaps for men so they could enjoy good soap. As with all of my handmade soaps, I get asked why someone should use handmade soaps, regardless of gender. My answer is simple - good soap matters. For more in-depth information on why handmade soap matters, read my blog Handcrafted Artisan Soap: The Top Four Questions People Are Asking – Serendipity Bath & Body (serendipitybb.com).
Why Men’s Handmade Soap from Serendipity Bath & Body?
Handmade soap doesn’t just benefit women but men as well. A significant benefit is that I make my handmade soaps with natural ingredients. They do not contain any harsh chemicals or ingredients. All but one of the soaps from my men’s handmade soap collection uses goat milk. Goat milk has high amounts of fats, particularly caprylic acid, which gently removes dirt and debris without removing the skin’s natural fatty acids. In essence, it acts as a natural exfoliant. This is particularly helpful for men with dry or sensitive skin, as men tend to have thicker and rougher skin.
For those men who need extra attention for their skin, I crafted the Lava Falls Men’s Charcoal Soap so men can nourish their skin. I've formulated this handmade soap with activated charcoal, which is well-known for its detoxifying properties. In addition to deep cleansing properties, this men's charcoal soap is formulated with nourishing ingredients to help moisturize and hydrate the skin.
In developing my men’s handmade soap collection with them in mind, I’ve also worked on incorporating masculine fragrances for them. Some of the masculine scents I’ve put in the handmade soaps for men include wild cypress, bergamot, sandalwood, cedarwood, amber, and musk. Each handmade soap for men has a unique combination based on what you are looking for. You can find all of the ingredients in each soap on my website.
My Lumberjack Men’s Soap has a rugged scent due to the combination of Wild Cypress, Ozone, Makrut Lime, Sea Salt, Oud, Elemi, Leather, Amber, Ocean Moss, and Frankincense.
One customer had this to say about the Lumberjack Men’s Soap:
“This is definitely a mild wonderful scent. Some men's scents are way too strong but Serendipity has made sure all the men's selections are mild yet noticeable.”
In addition to those two men’s soaps, there are the Mountain Man Men’s Soap, Barbershop Men’s Bergamot Soap, and the Suds & Stout Men’s Soap. And yes, you read that right, the Suds & Stout Men’s Soap is made with stout beer, which makes this soap super bubbly. It is a fun way to bring happy hour into your shower.
A Quick Note on Using Handmade Soap
Once you’ve ordered and received my handmade men’s soap, here are some quick notes on using it most effectively for long-lasting benefits.
- When you finish your soap, do not leave it in a direct stream of water.
- Allow the soap to dry in between uses.
- A self-draining soap dish or soap lift is recommended for a long-lasting bar.
And most importantly, later, rinse, repeat, and enjoy!
Men, like women, deserve good soap, not just everyday soap. Men also deserve to have soap created with them in mind. It was my goal when I started my men’s handmade soap collection, and I’m proud of these soaps. I make them with all-natural ingredients designed to help men nourish their skin.
